General project information

North-C-Blade is a research and development project supported by the Energy Transition Fund of the Belgian Federal Government.

Fundamental, industrial research and feasibility studies are being performed by UGent and the industrial partners Engie Laborelec, ArcelorMittal, Ineos Inovyn and North Sea Port.

Research objective

North-C-Blade targets axis 1 of the energy transition plan: renewable energy sources in the North Sea and biofuels. The core is recycling the composite materials found in wind blades via gasification. We adopt a twin-track approach:

  • Pre-treatment of blades and composite materials to enable their (co-)feeding to (existing) gasification plants
  • Boost the sustainability of gasification processes

North-C-Blade specifically targets:

Novel electrified reactors

Post-gasification fiber analysis

Feasibility study for an industrial gasification plant

Clean-up and upgrading of the gasification input
